Which classes do you teach online?
MGMT 9070: Legal Issues in Human Resources Management and MGMT 9040: Organizational Behavior and Development
In what ways do you connect with online students?
Mostly by email, text, or phone.
What do you want your students to take away from class?
I want my students to take away different things depending on the particular class they are in. However, I hope all of my students will have sharpened their analytical skills, increased their ability to express themselves in the form of written communication, and become better decision makers and problem solvers.
What advice would you give to your online students?
Try to stay focused and stay current with the class. Be careful to pay attention to details, like when assignments are due and what the basic course requirements are. Take some time to carefully read the course syllabus and make sure you understand what is required and when.
Why did you start teaching?
I began teaching as an adjunct at Cape Cod Community College in W. Barnstable, MA, only one month after receiving my MBA and loved it and wanted to make it my career. However, I found it was difficult for someone without hands-on business experience to land a full-time teaching position, so I went to work in the industry for 10 years or so, all while wanting to become a professor. Finally, the opportunity at Fitchburg State came along and I have been here ever since.
What qualities make someone particularly successful in business?
Drop dead focus and paying attention to the small details.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
“The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum.
Tell us something your students may not know about you:
I played left wing (ice hockey) for one of the first women's hockey teams in the state called the Massport Jets. We traveled to Montreal for games with other college teams and also played against boys and men quite regularly. I remain an avid hockey fan to this day and having grown up just two hours outside of Montreal (U.S. side of the border), I love the Montreal Canadians and have had the opportunity to hoist the Stanley Cup with them several times.
What do you do when you need a laugh?
Late night TV and Tuesday dinners with Joe McAloon.
