Dr. Beverley Hollingsworth

MBA Program Chair and Professor

"

I wanted to help students learn. Scholarship is a tradition in my family and I tried to avoid becoming a teacher, but could not. I had good teachers in my early stages of learning and wanted to make a difference in the lives of students as they try to comprehend the various topics and application of the same.

    Email and blackboard.

  • What do you want your students to take away from class?

To understand what it means to look behind the numbers and explain the purpose of an accounting system that protects the entity's assets, understand and be able to explain the foundations from which our accounting system is derived, appreciate how personal ethics affects the accounting profession, and identify the importance of why mangers must have a core understanding of managing costs.

  • Why did you start teaching?

I wanted to help students learn. Scholarship is a tradition in my family and I tried to avoid becoming a teacher, but could not. I had good teachers in my early stages of learning and wanted to make a difference in the lives of students as they try to comprehend the various topics and application of the same.

I believe that an education is to help one function in life and if a vocation is derived from doing so, then that's a bonus, but individuals must be educated for their own good.

  • What advice would you give to your online students?

It takes discipline to successfully complete any distance learning. A special time and place should be set aside for study and assignment completion.

Read the syllabus and follow the instructor's instructions for all assignments. Never take for granted that the teaching style and type of assignments is the same from one class to another or one week to another.

The instructor sets the tone which should be to help the student attain the highest level of learning.

  • What qualities make someone particularly successful in accounting?

Most people believe that accounting is math. Accounting is all about making sure that things add up. So because some MBA students have not had a background in accounting they have to work a little harder. This means they should approach each class with a determination to spend more time getting familiar with the discipline.

Accounting students usually get positions more quickly than other students. This means that an entity could hire them for doing payables or receivables or just plain data entry or analysis.

Keep a focus on your main objective in becoming an accountant while making inquiries on possible positions to people with the profession.

If an MBA student desires to teach someday, then they should first seek a position within their current work experience. It's a good place to start and eventually build from one course to others. Students like to hear experiences that direct relate to course concepts and application.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

“Age of Turbulence” by Alan Greenspan.

  • Tell us something your students may not know about you:

In trying to get an offer for a position, a young woman interviewed with different companies. Some offered a great staring somewhere between the scale.

She found her current supervisor not qualified for her position and also not having personal relations skills.

The woman was bent on getting a position in a hospital for various reasons and tried without success. So she thought about leaving her state to find her position.

Her superiors found her to be brilliant and that she also had great leadership skills. Instead of the young woman leaving for another state, her superiors found her a position within the same city as a Director.

Do your best at whatever you do. It really helps if you have a passion for it. People will notice and reward you.

  • What do you do when you need a laugh?

    Watch advertisements.
