Juliette Buchanan wanted to go back to school to develop her career and make a positive impact in the healthcare field, but two obstacles prevented her from reaching those goals: She was wary of taking on the debt associated with advancing her education and, as an introvert, felt hesitant to position herself for leadership roles.
Nonetheless, Juliette applied and was accepted to the MBA in Healthcare Management online program at Fitchburg State University. A former coworker highly recommended Fitchburg State, and Juliette’s research confirmed that the program met her requirements of affordability and accelerated time to completion.
The concern regarding debt cleared up when Juliette received an email encouraging her to apply for the Risepoint Joseph McAloon Memorial Scholarship, a financial need-based scholarship awarded to outstanding online MBA students at Fitchburg State. That email, she said, “was life-changing.”
“It really made me want it even more — to succeed and to show that I could do this,” she said. “It was just nice to have people reach out and know that you are capable, and [they] have faith in you.”
Originally from Seattle, Juliette now lives in Douglas, Massachusetts, and works at the Veterans Health Administration as a contract specialist. Continuing her education has unlocked new possibilities for career growth, empowering Juliette to work toward the change she’d like to see in healthcare. The MBA program also gave her the confidence to take on leadership roles in her volunteer work.
“Being a leader has always scared me, but also fascinated me at the same time,” Juliette said. “I didn’t think it was something that I could do. But as I really got to think about it and continue with my education, I realized … why not?”
The program’s coursework has already helped improve Juliette’s leadership and organizational abilities, two valuable qualities she is applying at her current job as she continues to elevate her skillset even more while pursuing her degree and a 2025 graduation. She finds her professors knowledgeable, helpful, and invested in her success.
Juliette has advice for anyone on the fence about completing an online program.
“Making that initial commitment to dedicate yourself to higher education is the hardest part,” she said. “I found that if you take one step at a time, it gets easier. I can’t believe that I’m close to actually finishing something that was just a dream a little while ago.”
