Fitchburg State University is a public institution dedicated to integrating high-quality professional programs with strong liberal arts and sciences studies. Founded in 1894, the university now offers more than 30 undergraduate programs and 22 master’s degree programs, serving 7,000 full and part-time students. Mission

Fitchburg State University is committed to excellence in teaching and learning and blends liberal arts and sciences and professional programs within a small college environment. History

1894: The State Normal School in Fitchburg, established by an act of the Massachusetts Legislature, opened in temporary quarters in an old high school building. It had a teaching staff of three and 46 participants in its two-year teacher training program for women.

1896: The school expanded into a new building and set up the State Schools of Observation and Practice.

1911: The school initiated the first practical arts teacher training course in the country for men.

1915: State Normal School offered its first summer courses.

1930: The school began offering bachelor’s degrees in practical arts.

1932: The name became State Teachers College at Fitchburg.

1935: The college was authorized to establish graduate programs.

1954: The school began its first evening classes.

1960: The college changed its name to The State College at Fitchburg and began offering degrees in disciplines other than education.

1965: The school’s name became Fitchburg State College.

2008: The college offered its first full-time online degree program.

2010: After legislation established a State University system in Massachusetts, the college enacted the name Fitchburg State University.
